about

A very old English piece sung to send a soul off into the afterlife.

Kinda a weird bastardization of the old language and modern in this version (most versions stick with strictly the old). Some liberties were taken for sure.

The biggest difference is 'night' and 'light' are pronounced as they are today, and not like 'neat' and 'leet' in that old dialect. Also, 'Christ receive your soul' becomes 'Light receive your soul' -so as to be more universal for all ears. The song is likely so ancient it's probably pre-Christian anyhow.

The basic message is that you may face purgatorial trials when you die, but in the end we will all be in peace; and if you live as a kind person you'll likely have an easier time in this life and the next.

lyrics

This ae night, this ae night,
Every night and all,
Fire and fight and candle light.
For Light receive thy soul.

When from hence away art past,
Every night and all,
To Whinny-moor thou com'st at last-
And Light receive thy soul...

If thou ever gavest hosen and shoon,
Every night and all,
Sit thee doon and put them on,
And Light receive thy soul...

If hosen and shoon thou ne'er gav'st none
Every night and all,
The whinny shall prick thee to the bare bone;
And Light receive thy soul...

From Whinny-moor when thou mayest pass,
Every night and all,
To Brig O' Dread thou com'st at last-
And Light receive thy soul...

If ever thou gave all [or 'gave o' '] silver and gold,
Every night and all,
At t' Brig O' Dread thou'll find foothold,
And Light receive thy soul...

But if silver and gold thou never gav'st none,
Every night and all,
Thou'll down doon tumble towards Hell's flames,
And Light receive thy soul...

From Brig O' Dread when thou may'st pass,
Every night and all,
To Purgatory fire thou com'st at last;
And Light receive thy soul...

If ever thou gavest meat or drink,
Every night and all,
The fire shall never make thee shrink,
And Light receive thy soul...

If meat or drink thou ne'er gav'st none,
Every night and all,
The fire will burn thee to the bare bone;
And Light receive thy soul...

This old night, this one night,
Every night and all,
Fire and flight and candle-light,
And Light receive thy soul...

Dessert Sessions Collective Ontario, California

This is not the Desert Sessions! This is a parody/tribute. You may dig it just as much though. It's still really trippy stuff to groove to, and is made in the same spirit of random friends coming together in different configurations, and improvising tunes, then releasing them. Enjoy. ... more
